Class Description

Join a small, welcoming circle of makers and experience the quiet rhythm of the pottery wheel. This 6-week throwing course is designed for beginners and returning students who want to build confidence, develop foundational skills, and enjoy the process of making together. Instructor: Kate Metten Each week, we’ll focus on essential wheel techniques while allowing space for exploration, practice, and personal projects. The class moves at a supportive pace, with plenty of individual guidance and time at the wheel. Over the six weeks, you’ll learn how to: • Prepare and wedge clay • Handbuilding Basics • Center clay on the wheel • Throw cylinders, bowls, and cups • Shape and refine your forms • Trim and finish your pieces • Explore simple surface decoration • Glaze your work All materials are included — clay, glaze, and firings. Most students create 8–15 functional pieces to take home. With a semi-private class size of 4 people, the atmosphere is relaxed, intimate, and community-focused — a space to slow down, work with your hands, and connect with others through the shared experience of clay. Whether you’re brand new or returning to the wheel, this class is about building skill, finding flow, and becoming part of a growing studio community. Dates: July 8 - July 29, 2026 Location: Kate Metten Ceramics, 416 e Broadway Instructor: My name is Jacob Hardy. I have been working with pottery since I was 12 years old, developing a strong passion for ceramic and visual art. Recently, I have taught pottery classes for both high school students and adults, helping beginners experience and build confidence on the pottery wheel. Alongside pottery, I am an experienced visual artist with a background in oil painting, digital art, and 3D sculpting. I studied Fine Arts at KPU and recently completed a diploma in Animation Concept Art at Vancouver Film School. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others and creating a welcoming environment where students can explore creative expression through clay.
