About
Kate Metten works at the intersection of painting and ceramics. She balances an exhibition practice and a line of handmade tableware. Her pottery redefines the everyday through her meticulously handcrafted ceramic tableware. Her distinctive creations have been featured and are sold at prestigious institutions such as the Vancouver Museum, Polygon Gallery, and Wil Aballe Art Projects as well as internationally through Simons Fabrique 1840 and UK Vogue Magazine. Recipient of the 2023 Judson Beaumont BC Achievement Award in Applied Art and Design, Kate's work bridges functionality and art, blurring the line between utilitarian and sculptural forms.
Function critiques modern disposable culture, with each piece meticulously crafted to stand the test of time. Her studio embraces a zero-waste model cultivating recycled clay and locally sourced raw materials. She has adapted the historical process of raw material sourcing for an urban context by sourcing clay from Vancouver's many construction sites. Inspired by the natural world, Kate’s signature wheel-thrown pieces feature a colourful palette of personal glaze recipes. She uses Neodymium Earth Minerals to incorporate exploration of light and perception into glaze research. Her creations reflect a deep study of clay’s intimate, tangible qualities and its rich history’s dialogue with contemporary practices. Abstraction and intuitive construction allows a response to materials creating objects that arise as evidence of the hand and mind in motion.
