Class Description
Discover the possibilities of clay in this welcoming introductory beginner course led by artist Vanessa Tam. Beginners will explore foundational hand-building techniques—including pinch pots, slab and coil construction, and working with the extruder—to create expressive and functional ceramic forms. Participants will also have the opportunity to try the pottery wheel and experience the basics of wheel throwing. With supportive, step-by-step instruction and plenty of room for experimentation. Instructor: Vanessa Tam Over the 4 weeks, you’ll learn how to: • Prepare clay • Handbuilding basics • Slab rolling • Center clay on the wheel • Throw cylinders, bowls, and cups • Shape and refine your forms • Trim and finish your pieces • Explore simple surface decoration • Glaze your work All materials are included — clay, glaze, and firings. Most students create 6–10 functional pieces to take home. With a semi-private class size of 4 people, the atmosphere is relaxed, intimate, and community-focused — a space to slow down, work with your hands, and connect with others through the shared experience of clay. Whether you’re brand new or returning to the wheel, this class is about building skill, finding flow, and becoming part of a growing studio community. Dates: October 8, 15, 22, 29, 2026 Location: Kate Metten Ceramics, 416 E Broadway
